Running vs climbing

Running sux. Your feet hurt, your muscles ache, you sweat like a pig (where did that term come from anyway, since pigs don’t sweat?), your belly cramps up, your lungs scream out for air, your lungs burn, you feel nauseous. Why anyone would subject themselves to this torture is beyond me. But people do. Every single day. Some do it for pleasure. Others to keep fit. Some of these masochists even compete in races. Races. They even run marathons, folks.

And know what? I would too if I could avoid ever having to climb a mountain. Why, you ask? Why would a seemingly sane (if a little odd) person like me take up such an obviously insane pastime? Well, I’m here to tell you. I’m afraid of heights. Yes, it’s true. I hate to fly, I hate the top of Centrepoint tower, I dislike ferris wheels intensely and I refuse point-blank to jump out of an airplane with or without a parachute. So, if my only options were to take up running, or climb a mountain, running it is.

Thankfully, though, I have other options. So fear not – I will not be taking up running any time soon. I prefer other forms of exercise that don’t require me to leave my air-conditioned home and encounter all the neighbourhood dogs, like treadmills, push-ups and ellipticals, for example. I think I’ll just stick with those and leave the running to others.
