Monato Zoo and Other Places I’ve Seen

First off, I just want to begin by apologising for not posting this yesterday. I’ve been feeling unwell the past couple of days and I just didn’t feel up to doing much of anything yesterday except sleep and read. Still, better late than never, right?

Aside from that, my holiday has been going quite well so far. On Tuesday, we took Wolfie (my sister’s dog) to the beach for a walk, along with a neighbour whose dog he is friends with. Afterwords we went for a drive to check out a few little towns. We drove through Victor Harbour, Port Elliot and Goolwa.

While in Goolwa, we stopped at a little place down by the ocean. I don’t recall the name, but it was situated right beside where the cruises leave from. Anyway, we had a drink and a delicious regional platter which consisted of various cheeses, fruits, meats and jams. It was quite economical and a lovely way to relax over lunch. I recommend dropping in if you are in the area.

On Wednesday, my mother, sister and I explored Hahndorf. A lot of places were closed, but there was enough open for us to enjoy ourselves. We had a nice lunch at Cafe Ainsette or something like that and explored a few of the stores that were open. It isn’t a large town, but it is very pretty and well worth a visit. I would like to go back again when everything is open.

During the latter half of the week we visited Stirling, where we had lunch at Miss Perez. I wasn’t overly fond of my milkshake there, but the food more than made up for it. I ordered a ‘Halouminator’, basically a burger using Haloumi instead of meat. It was the best damn burger I’ve had in ages, and the prices were quite reasonable as well.

As we made our way back to the car after exploring Stirling, we stopped in at a little store called ‘Red Cacao’ where I bought some brownies. If you are near Stirling, I strongly recommend stopping in there. The brownies were perfectly made, perfect consistency, perfect amount of chocolate-y-ness, perfect richness, excellent price. Definitely pop in and try them if you are nearby!

On Sunday, we visited Monato Zoo, which turned out to be a wonderful day out. We rode a bus which took us through the enclosures allowing us to see the animals up close. We visited at the right time of year, because we saw loads of little baby animals. We were lucky enough to see baby giraffes, baby cheetahs, baby deer, baby hyenas, a baby chimp, baby bison, baby meerkats (so cute!) and, off in the distance baby emus and baby zebras.

Some other animals we saw were lions, a bunch of other types of deer, some kind of goat, ostriches, kangaroos and African Wild Dogs, the last of which I hadn’t even heard of before, but which are actually quite beautiful, if a little strange-sounding. Oh, and we saw rhinos as well, both white and black.

The gift shop also had some stick insects, barking geckos and a carpet python on display, as well as a bunch of animal skins. Unfortunately, the geckos were hiding too well for us to get a glimpse of them. It’s the first time I’ve been to a zoo in years. If you ever visit Adelaide, this is one attraction that should be on your must-see list.

Anyway, that is about all we’ve done so far. Hopefully, I’ll feel better tomorrow, as I don’t wish to be ill for the last few days of my holiday. Have you seen any of the places I’ve been to this week? Do you want to? Let me know in the comments below.
