Harry Potter Fanfics – 15+ Chapters

This is a list of fan-fictions that I recommend. The criteria for this list are as follows:

  1.  It must be a Harry Potter fan-fiction.
  2. It must have at least 15 chapters.
  3. It must be well-written.
  4. It may be canon-compliant, AU, slash, OOC or any other kind of story, so long as it fits the other criteria.

Unintentionally Yours by Dinkel
61 Chapters
Summary: What if Voldemort had found another way to get what he wants? What if he wants something else now? He proposes a contract to assure peace between the Light and the Dark… and it involves Harry.
Comment: Let me just start out by saying that this story contains some pretty graphic rape scenes, so if this is likely to be a trigger, it’s probably best to avoid it. Having said that, this is a well-written story. I like that being forced into a relationship with Voldemort did not break Harry’s spirit. One little niggly annoyance is Harry’s tendency to be childlike. This is not uncommon with author’s attempting to convey a sense of innocence, but it can be distracting and irritating. Thankfully, this is not an overwhelming trait in this story. If you are able to cope with the graphic bits, I highly recommend this fanfiction.

Perception is Everything by Kendra James
45 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: When Severus Snape is left in charge of Hogwarts over the christmas break, he is less than pleased to discover Harry will be one of his charges. Events force him to face that Mr Potter may not be quite what he has assumed all these years. Year 6.
Comment: This story alternates between heart-rending and heart-warming, with a few little giggles to lighten the mood in between. This is definitely one of the better guardian!Severus stories I have read and I highly recommend it.

Unbuttoned by lastcrazyhorn
31 Chapters
WIP – Last Updated 18 August 2013
Summary: Harry doesn’t know exactly what’s happening, but something isn’t right between him and Professor Lupin, and he’s determined to find out why. Will Snape be able to help? Abuse, implied non-con, AU, HP&PA
Comment: This story is well-written and captures the reader from the start. The descriptions of Harry’s reaction to finding out about the abuse are heartbreaking. I like how the author shows the lingering effects of the abuse. Too often, these stories have Harry recovering within weeks and that just isn’t how it really works, so kudos to lastcrazyhorn on that one.

Harry Potter – Three to Backstep by Sinyk
50 Chapters
Summary: A blend of the Reptilia28 and CoastalFirebird time travel challenges; Harry, Hermione and Daphne Greengrass die during the final battle and are sent back in time to set things back on track. AD/MW/RW/GW!bash. Rated M for themes and language.
Comment: One thing that annoyed me about this story was the use of Grim Reapers or Guardian Angels to move the story along. Despite that gripe, however, this was a surprisingly good story.

Angry Harry and the Seven by Sinyk
87 Chapters
Summary: Just how will Dumbledore cope with a Harry who is smart, knowledgeable, sticks up for himself and, worst still, is betrothed? A Harry who has a penchant for losing his temper?
Comment: I have read bad reviews about this story and, honestly, I don’t know why. It is a fairly cliché super!Harry story, granted, but it is no worse than others of its ilk and, I daresay, maybe even better, so I don’t know why this one was singled out for vitriol. I actually enjoyed this story. There are times when I am stressed and tired and just want a bit of light reading and this story was perfect for that. Plus, there were lots of funny moments that made me laugh.

Susan Bones and the Prisoner of Azkaban by joemjackson
49 Chapters
Summary: What if Harry Potter was sent to Azkaban for killing Cedric Diggory? What if a Hufflepuff questioned his conviction?
Comment: I haven’t read many Harry/Susan stories, but I have to say, I really enjoyed this one. I definitely recommend it.

It All Started With A Trip To Gringotts by jadedragon36
60 Chapters
Summary: Voldemort is dead and Harry has finally graduated from Hogwarts and is ready to live his life, but his world is turned upside down when he realizes friends can become enemies and enemies become friends. Powerful Harry.
Comment: This story starts out a little forced but the author doesn’t take long to find their feet. If you like spy novels, you will probably love this story. There are so many twists and turns that, at times, I had no idea which way was up. Conspiracy theorists will love the idea of a ‘master player’ manipulating each of the people we thought was the bad guy. One thing I will say about this story — it is definitely not predictable!

Harry Potter and the Final Straw by bellerophon30
35 Chapters
Harry/Luna, Ron/Susan, Hermione/Colin, Neville/Tracy
Summary: A 6th year story. Harry takes a look at his life and doesn’t like what he sees, so he decides to declare his independence of Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix and fight the war on his own terms.
Comment: There are actually two versions of this story. Both begin the same but, in this one, Harry elects to remain at Hogwarts while in the other, The Brave New World, Harry leaves and heads to America. Both stories make for excellent reading and I definitely recommend reading both. The reason I chose to add Harry Potter and the Final Straw over The Brave New World is simply because I found the constant and detailed quidditch matches (and other competitions) in the other story became tedious after a while, though there is still plenty of that here. Overall, I recommend both stories, but this one is just slightly better than the other.

A Black Comedy by nonjon
31 Chapters
Harry/Various, Sirius/Various
Summary: Two years after defeating Voldemort, Harry falls into an alternate dimension with his godfather. Together, they embark on a new life filled with drunken debauchery, thievery, and generally antagonizing all their old family, friends, and enemies.
Comment: This story is hilarious. There are some serious bits here and there but, for the most part, I could not stop laughing. The best part is that the author has tried to cater to everyone, no matter your tastes in humour. There is sarcasm, dry wit, potty humour, penis jokes — there aren’t many people who won’t manage to find at least something to laugh at in this story.

Harry Potter and the Manipulator of Destiny by Wheezy1
39 Chapters
Harry/Hermione, Neville/Luna, Remus/Tonks
Summary: Post OotP. Harry finds that Dumbledore has been less than honest or helpful with him, takes control of his own life and finds the training he needs from others.
Comment: This story is a bit cliche but doesn’t really contain a lot of conflict. However, if you are into the whole ‘powerful Harry trained to the hilt by every being imaginable until defeating Riddle is a piece of cake’ type story, then you will love this. I’m not being critical — I actually enjoyed this story. Also, it ends really well. I cried.

Harry Potter and the Slytherin’s Stone by Half-BPrincess
19 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: Who said that all heroes had to be brave? Who said that all heroes had to be bold? Who said that all heroes should be Gryffindors? Who said that all heroes want to be heroes? Who said that Harry Potter was a hero? Warning – Strong abuse and swearing.
Comment: As you might guess from the title, this is a Slytherin Harry story. I like how Snape recognises that Harry is not like his father and treats him like any of his other snakes. There is an unfinished sequel called Harry Potter and Slytherin’s Chamber, but I have not read it as yet.

Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets by Original Dark Angel
15 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: Dobby never stopped the mail and as a result, Severus Snape has to rescue our hero from Privet Drive. The only way to keep him safe requires an Unusual Adoption. Abuse via Dursleys.
Comment: Despite the heavy topics contained within this story, it is actually a surprisingly light read. There is an unfinished sequel, Jamie Snape and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but it hasn’t been updated since 2009 and has only 3 chapters, so I didn’t bother with it.

Lost Perspective by Bellegeste
15 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: When Harry receives disturbing news he plans a dark and terrible revenge. Tense, tightly plotted starts light, gets much, much darker…
Comment: If you aren’t a fan of dark Harry, you will not like this story, as it digs deeply into the hate he feels for Severus and the lengths he goes to to act on that hate. There are several sequels that deal with the consequences of Harry’s actions, but I won’t attempt to describe those here as it has been ages since I read them and I really cannot be bothered to re-read them. For those who are interested, they are:
Lost Perspective 2: Snape’s Confession
Lost Perspective 3: Repercussions
Lost Perspective 4: Post Mortem
Lost Perspective 5: Read My Mind
Lost Perspective 6: Deck The Halls
Lost Perspective 7: Payback Time

Outcast’s Alley by RhinnanT
16 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: When Harry goes through some changes the summer before his Fifth year, his relatives don’t react well. Suddenly Harry finds himself homeless and alone, and learning to cope with yet another whole new world he’d never known existed. creature, royalty
Comment: I really enjoyed this story and I was disappointed when it came to an end. Unfortunately, it does have an unresolved ending due to the fact that it was originally meant to be part of a trilogy. However, the author abandoned the second story after two chapters. Despite the non-ending, this story is still very much worth reading.

Parselenic by EmpyrealFantasy
40 Chapters
Harry/Voldemort, Harry/Lucius, Harry/OC
Summary: With maturity comes understanding, and Harry understands just fine. After ten years in training, Harry returns to the moment he left…with a whole new plan for himself. ºThe Light will never know what hit itº Vampire!Harry Dark!Harry
Comment: I love dark, playful Harry and this story has plenty, which made me a very happy camper. I quite like the way the author wrote the relationship between Harry and Tom as well. An emotionally stunted dominant personality like Voldemort was always going to have big problems in the relationship department, especially when paired with someone as emotionally inexperienced as Harry, and EmpyrealFantasy portrayed this well. So many stories brush past this issue. My only gripe is merely a matter of taste – I think a story like this should have had a sad ending – perhaps having Harry grieving Tom’s death many years down the track, for example. Like I said, though, that is merely a difference of opinion – there is nothing inherently wrong with the story’s conclusion and others would probably like it.

Lord of Caer Azkaban by Rorschach’s Blot
34 Chapters
Summary: A letter causes Harry to learn some surprising things about his lineage, a different twist on the usual Harry in Azkaban story line.
Comment: Harry finds his feet and transforms from depressed teenager to commanding Lord a little quickly to be believable. Nevertheless, this is a pleasant read that I quite enjoyed.

Harry Crow by robst
106 Chapters
Summary: What will happen when a goblin-raised Harry arrives at Hogwarts. A Harry who has received training, already knows the prophecy and has no scar. With the backing of the goblin nation and Hogwarts herself.
Comment: This is extremely well-written and it is one of my favourite stories featuring a powerful, independent Harry. It is also one of my favourite Harry/Hermione stories. This story can be a little slow in places, but it is done in a way that enhances the story, rather than detracting from it.

Descent Into Darkness by Athey
32 Chapters
Summary: It’s Harry’s 4th year at Hogwarts and his name has just come out of the Goblet of Fire. Everyone has abandoned him and he feels utterly alone. Through an accident Harry and the piece of Voldemort’s soul that resides inside him begin to interact and Harry slowly begins to change. He becomes stronger and more aware, and slowly grows aware of a more sinister course of events that has perpetuated his entire life.
Comment: This (along with the sequel, Harry Potter and the Breeding Darkness) is, far and away, my favourite Harry Potter fan fiction. At the time I have added it to this list, I have just finished my sixth reading and I anticipate many more to come. There are some grammatical errors in this story but they are not so frequent as to be annoying, and the plot and characterisation more than make up for any mistakes. While there is some slash near the end of the story, this is mainly pre-slash, with the bulk of the relationship occurring in the sequel. Descent Into Darkness is written incredibly well overall, but I particularly love how Athey manages to convey the power and seduction of the taboo. I cannot recommend this story highly enough.

Harry Potter and the Breeding Darkness by Athey & Danyealle-sama
65 Chapters
WIP – Last Updated August 26, 2015
Summary: Harry escapes Privet Drive and Dumbledore for the summer after his fourth year by staying with Tom. Death Eater meetings, training, and discovering new depths to his relationship with the Dark Lord. Harry grows and changes even more, and upon returning to Hogwarts for his fifth year, he discovers even more surprises as he slowly grows his base, and begins careful manipulations as he works towards taking Hogwarts from within.
Comment: This is the sequel to Descent Into Darkness and it is just as well-written. The first part of the story was written by the Athey with Danyealle-sama adopting it somewhere around chapter 25. Despite her claims that their writing styles are quite different, Danyealle-sama manages to blend the transition almost seamlessly. Descent Into Darkness and Harry Potter and the Breeding Darkness are my favourite Harry Potter fan fictions, though I must admit to enjoying Breeding Darkness slightly more than it’s predecessor. If you are looking for a dark!Harry story, then these stories should definitely be on your to-read list.

30 Minutes That Changed Everything by Radaslab
55 Chapters
Summary: AU. Year 2148: Gobal Population: 1. He made a mistake 150 years ago or so and now the human race no longer exists. For a century or so, he has sought a way to fix it all. Can he, or is the end of the world inevitable?
Comment: This is a very different take on the typical time travel story. This story contains manipulative!Dumbledore and has an unfinished sequel – 30 Minutes II: The Gathering Storm. I really enjoyed this story, especially some of Sensei’s ponderings.

30 Minutes II: The Gathering Storm by Radaslab
16 Chapters
WIP – Last updated November 1, 2009
Summary: Harry & Co. enter Hogwarts. Dumbledore is not faced with a pawn. Voldemort is not faced with fertile ground. The world is about to change as war and revolution are in the air.
Comment: This is the sequel to Radaslab’s story 30 Minutes That Changed Everything. It is worth reading despite the fact that it appears to have been abandoned.

Web of Lies by Star Polaris
41 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: After GoF Harry is feeling depressed, seeing how the Dursley are treating him, Dumbledore decides to take him in. To which lengths will the headmaster go to insure their safety?
Comment: This story has a sequel – Web of Lies: Revelations. This is a Dumbledore mentors Harry fic and I guess you could also call it a Snape mentors Harry fic as well. It is quite detailed, very well-written and definitely worth reading.

Web of Lies: Revelations by Star Polaris
46 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: Alec’s year at Hogwarts can’t be normal, after all, being the Harry Potter and posing as Albus Dumbledore’s grandson is bound to bring trouble.
Comment: This is the sequel to Web of Lies and you definitely need to read that first. They are both awesome stories and well worth reading.

Earl of the North by Lord Silvere
50 Chapters
Summary: Harry is framed for the mass murder of Muggles after he deals Voldemort a stunning blow. He is sent to Azkaban where he and his cell mate, Bellatrix Black, begin to discover Harry’s heritage and his potential power as they plot to escape.
Comment: This is one of my favourite betrayed!Harry, manipulative!Dumbledore stories. The relationship between Harry and Bellatrix is handled well, as is Harry’s reaction to his new situation. This is definitely well worth reading.

Had I Known by kayly silverstorm
50 Chapters
No Pairings
Summary: After killing Voldemort during seventh year, Harry vanished without a trace. But now, 8 years later, a deadly secret forces him to return and it seems that only Snape will be able to save him.
Comment: The summary for this story really does not do it justice. This is by far my favourite story dealing with the relationship between Harry and Snape. The entire story has a sense of melancholy that only increases as Snape comes to understand Harry’s circumstances and motivations and realises just how much he didn’t know about the Boy-Who-Lived. Not only is this story extremely well-written, but it also has an ending that doesn’t disappoint.

Delenda Est by Lord Silvere
46 Chapters
Summary: Harry is a prisoner, and Bellatrix has fallen from grace. The accidental activation of Bella’s treasured heirloom results in another chance for Harry. It also gives him the opportunity to make the acquaintance of the young and enigmatic Bellatrix Black as they change the course of history.
Comment: This is a rather unusual time-travel story. It is quite well-written and enjoyable to read.
