Top Ten Twitter Writing Events

Twitter has many uses and there is something there for almost any interest. It’s a great way to communicate and connect with people with like-minded interests all around the world. I personally have many interests, and I follow a wide variety of people on twitter. I follow people who post such content as history, fun facts, LGBTQI+, and current affairs.

However, the largest group of people I follow on twitter are other writers and it is through them that I discovered twitter writing events. For those who don’t know, twitter writing events are hashtag games wherein the host posts a theme and participants write a tweet-length microfic revolving around, or inspired by, that theme. Q & A Revisited (Again)

It has been a while since I took this survey. Since I have several new readers and since my answers may have changed, I have decided to take it again. I have provided a link in the related articles for those who wish to compare my answers to the original. Feel free to post the same questionnaire on your own blog and link back here so I can see your answers.
I stole this from fiernymph:

1. What is the thing in life you are most proud of accomplishing? Overcoming my Agoraphobia.

2. What is the wildest thing you have ever done? Had sex on the front porch of my MIL’s house.

3. Who or what is your first thought in the morning? What time is it?

4. What’s the most unusual item that you have ever just found?
An expensive, fully functional chest of draws left on the side-walk with a sign saying ‘Free’.

5. What’s the one thing you would really like to tell someone but you can’t? I still don’t know.
6. What is the one thing you wished you had the guts to do but probably never will? Go back to Uni.

7. Has there ever been a love in your life that you wished you had never let go? No.
8. What is your dream vacation? I would dearly love to visit Japan.

9. If someone gave you $1 million dollars (an anonymous donation), what would you do with the money? Buy a small house and a large car. If there is any left, I would invest it for retirement.
10. If you had one wish, for anything in the world, would you keep it for yourself, give it to someone else, or make that wish for someone else if you knew they wouldn’t use it? I’m afraid I’d still take the selfish option here.

11. What is your favorite way to spend free time when you have it? Blogging.
12. If money were no object, what is the one thing you would indulge in to make your life better? Still a house.
13. Have you ever wanted to be on reality show? Yes, but only for the money.
14. How many miles per hour do your normally drive over the speed limit? Still don’t drive
15. What was your last thought before going to sleep last night? Stressing over bills.

16. If you could meet ONE person on your friends list [this could mean your blog, Facebook, YouTube – basically anything online] that you’ve never met before, who would it be? CheekyChickenHead (YouTube) or Father Bob (twitter).

17. If you could meet one person, alive or dead, and spend 3 hours with them, who would it be? Voltaire (the goth singer, not the historical figure).

18. If someone gave you 500 dollars, but the catch was you had to use it all frivolously, what would you do? Mani-Pedi, Waxing, Hair, Makeover, New outfit, Dinner out – I’ve never done some of these things – is $500 enough?

19. When you went to high school, did you attend a large high school and have a large class or was it a small school? Average.

20. What was the last piece of clothing you bought and why? Avon version of the Aah Bra because my under-wire bras both died and I heard that style of bra is ultra-comfy. True, by the way. It is THE most comfortable bra I ever wore!
21. Are you named after anyone? No
22. Favorite food item that you don’t like to tell people is a favorite? I have no qualms about stating my favourites. My problem is settling on just one thing.

23. Do you lurk on your Instant Messenger to avoid people you don’t want to talk to? I don’t use IMs.

24. If you could take on any profession for a day… what would it be and why? CEO of Microsoft because I just may earn enough to put a deposit on a house!

25. Ever dinged someone’s car in a parking lot and just drove off? No, because I don’t drive (not that I would anyway).

26. Anything you don’t have the strength, skill or nerve to do, but you’ve dreamt/had a passing fancy about doing? Being a famous artist. Unfortunately I can’t draw to save my life.
27. What was your most embarrassing moment? Mostly I get embarrassed when I say something completely incorrect.

28. If you sing in your car…do you stop when someone pulls up along side you? No I dance too (oh I don’t drive though  – I’m the passenger lol)

29. Would you go into outer space if given the chance? Definitely not.
30. You’ve just found a suitcase filled with enough money to make all your financial dreams come true, what do you do with it? Hand it in and hope it isn’t claimed!
31. Have you ever passed gas in an elevator that was empty on purpose? No

32. Metal or ink? Ink

33. Tell us something about yourself that most people do not know. I was raped when I was 12.
34. If money was no object, where would you take your family for a weeks vacation? We would totally go to Japan!

35. Name one friend from your past that you have lost contact with that you would like to be re-connected with. I don’t really feel a need to reconnect with anybody.

I Love to Zurk

Hm, #Zurker schreit neue User ja erstmal kräft...

Hm, #Zurker schreit neue User ja erstmal kräftig an… (Photo credit: TimDuran79)

These days, everybody is on at least one social network. In fact, if you are anything like me, you’re probably on more than one – Ok, lots more than one. Of course, not all social networks are created equal. Some are more popular than others. Some are better quality than others. Not unexpectedly, the two aren’t always one and the same. One of the most popular social networks also happens to be one of the most annoying. That’s right. I’m talking about facebook.

Despite recent concerns about privacy controls (or the lack of them), outrage about personal information being sold to third parties and irritation about in-feed advertisements, facebook remains one of the most popular social networks available. Almost everybody has a facebook page. It is a convenient way of keeping in contact with distant rellies and long-lost classmates who, lets face it, we barely remember anyway. For this reason I still maintain my facebook page, though I visit less and less.

Rather than settling for a site I am no longer even fifty per cent happy with, however, I have been on a journey. A quest. The mission of a lifetime. In an effort to find that ultimate of treasures – a viable alternative to facebook – I have travelled from one social network to another, joining, trying, sometimes staying (I loved pintrest!), more often leaving, but never finding that one site that was just right. Until, that is, I struck virtual gold when I discovered Zurker.

An up-and-coming new social networking site that is still in the beta stages, Zurker is, nonetheless, already a vibrant site in which members interact with kindness and respect. Lacking all the distracting games and apps that seem to have invaded facebook, I enjoy the fresh, clean look that Zurker presents. You own any data you enter into Zurker, but Zurker takes this one step further. Not only do users own their own data – they actually own the network!

That’s right, every user has the opportunity (completely optional, nobody has to pay to use the site and there is no free version vs pro version – everybody has the same experience) to buy what they call vShares – virtual shares which, at some point in the future will be converted to real shares. That’s right, real shares. Worth real money. And with a real say in the running of the site. You can also earn vShares free by referring new members. You can learn more about vShares and how they work here.

If you ask me, though, one of the best features on Zurker is the privacy controls. Each time you hook up with a new contact, you assign them a tag (or more than one tag if you like). For example, your mum might be tagged ‘family’, ‘close family’ and ‘clean fun’, your boss might be tagged ‘work’ or ‘colleagues’, while your best friend might be tagged ‘friend’ or ‘bestie’ and someone you just met on Zurker could be tagged ‘stalker’. Then, when you post content, you activate or de-activate your tags, giving you complete control over who sees what.

When posting content, you can allocate up to three zones. These act like hashtags on twitter, allowing users to search out content on a particular topic. For example, here is what you might see if you wanted to check out #memes:

You can see what other members have posted by visiting your streeme:

Kind of like in a real neighbourhood, your home view (pictured above), shows activity that is directly related to you, such as, when somebody leaves you a note or comments on one of your updates. On the other hand, your street view shows what your contacts have been up to – updates, links they’ve posted, comments they’ve left on other content and so on. Just as you can use tags for privacy, you can also use them to personalize your street view. Only want to see work-related content? Activate your ‘work’ or ‘colleagues’ tags and de-activate all the others. Don’t have much time and just want to catch up with family? Activate your ‘family’ tag and de-activate the others.

As with other social networking sites, each member gets their own profile page where they can list their likes and dislikes, post a profile pic and allow people to subscribe to their feed.

This is also where users can go to see a streamlined view of your posts (your posts will also show up on their streets), leave you a note or check out any pics you might have posted.

Brand new users might find Zurker a little confusing at first, but it is a breeze compared to your first time on facebook and it doesn’t take long to get used to it. The community there is awesome. They are friendly and welcoming, even when you disagree with them. Best of all, Zurker gives the impression that you are an important part of the community, not just another faceless marketing opportunity.

Take my advice. Pop on over to Zurker. Check it out. If you like it join. Preferably through my page – I could use the vShares. If you do join, hit that connect button – I would love to see what you have to say!

Websites I wouldn’t want to live without

We all have websites that we visit on a regular basis. Websites that have become a part of our daily lives. You know the ones I mean. Those sites where downtime or lost internet connection causes withdrawal. When you can’t get back to them soonest, you start to miss the site, you begin talking about it with your friends, you check twitter to see what’s going on (is the downtime explained, is it a trending topic), you start to panic if the downtime lasts more than a couple of hours, your fingers type the url in thin air…

Sometimes, it seems like we just can’t live without our favourite sites. Here are my top five sites I wouldn’t wish to live without. What are yours?

Number 1: WordPress

WordPress is the site that hosts my three blogs: Ravings of a Lunatic Mum (my personal blog), Quotes, Votes & Random Notes (where I record random bits and pieces that have caught my interest) and Lemonade (my family’s blog which I am in the process of transferring from Multiply). Since so much of my life is recorded on this site, it is definitely the one I would miss the most.

Number 2: BookCrossing

For those who don’t already know, I am an avid BookCrosser. This means I attach labels and a tracking number to my books when I am finished with them and then leave them laying about somewhere for a new reader to find. This is my biggest hobby (besides reading, of course) and it is loads of fun. It is such a thrill when a book checks in after being absent for a few years and it is wonderful to be a part of a community of book lovers. This is also where I keep track of my extensive wishlist.

Number 3: LibraryThing

This site has proved to be an invaluable tool in keeping track of my books. What do I have on my shelf? Which books have I lent out? What did I previously own, but have now released? When did I read this book? How long have I owned that one? It is a great place to create a catalogue of all your books and, like BookCrossing, you can catch up with a bunch of other book lovers.

Number 4: G-Mail

Everybody needs an email to survive these days and I strongly dislike using the one provided by my ISP. I much prefer to have a web-based address and, out of all those I have tried, Gmail seems to suit me best.

Number 5: Crunchyroll

I prefer not to utilise free anime on YouTube and such because there is no money going back to the artist. However, I cannot afford to buy every single anime I want to watch. That is why I have a subscription to Crunchyroll. It isn’t expensive and I can watch as much anime as I wish while having the piece of mind that Crunchyroll only provide those anime for which it has paid the license fee. I cannot get all of my favourite anime there, but it narrows down the field of what I have to buy, and gives me a chance to discover anime I would not otherwise have watched.

So those are my top 5 websites I wouldn’t want to live without. Why not go and check them out?

Sharing Life

Children belong with their families. Nothing is more important than living in connection with the ones you love and sharing life’s experiences.

This Speech is Not About Twitter

Robin Hood

Robin Hood (Photo credit: johnmuk)

Tonight I did my second speech from the Competent Communicator Manual. The excercise is ‘Structure Your Speech’. The title is ‘This Speech is Not About Twitter‘ and the time is meant to be 5-7 minutes (mine was just over 6 minutes). So here it is, the speech you’ve all been waiting for.
****************************************************************************************************************

I confess. For this speech I had difficulty settling on a topic. My interests are multitudinous and diverse – which to speak on? [Pause] Twitter is your friend. Mr Toastmaster, fellow members and guests.

Twitter abounds with Top 10 Lists, and it was to these that I looked for inspiration. I came across top 10 macro shots, top 10 children’s books and top 10 celebrity hairstyles. I saw top 10 science experiments to do at home, top 10 crime shows and top 10 horror films. There were top 10 vampires, top 10 sexy pirates and top 10 Robin Hoods. Hold on. Robin Hoods? Now there’s something I could speak about. Not the swashbuckling Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner and Jonas Armstrong variety of course, but the Real Robin Hood.

There are various legends regarding Robin Hood. Some say he was a Saxon nobleman by the name of Sir Robert of Locksley, others that he was the Earl of Huntingdon, still others that he was a lowly yeoman, a commoner, lower than a squire. Legends are strange creatures and any, or all, of these might be true. However, a gentleman by the name of John Paul Davis believes differently. Last year, he published a book entitled Robin Hood: The Unknown Templar. In it he revisits the original ballads in the hopes of discovering the true identity of that most famous of outlaws. Davis begins by establishing that Robin lived during the reign of Edward II, not Richard the Lionheart as is commonly believed. By studying descriptions of Robin Hood’s military prowess and his detailed knowledge of banking, in combination with his strict dedication to chastity, poverty and obedience and his particular reverence for the Virgin Mary, Davis contends that Robin Hood and his Merry Men were actually a band of Knight’s Templar, hiding out in Sherwood Forest after a Papal Bull declared the order heretical.

Hey! Wait a sec! The Knight’s Templar! People seem interested in them. I see them mentioned all over the place, after all. I could talk about that! The Knight’s Templar were a Christian religious military society established in 1118. Originally established to protect Christian pilgrims traveling the roads leading to and from the holy land, the Knights were accommodated in the palace of King Baldwin II. Although individual knights were vowed to poverty, the order as a whole became quite wealthy. As their influence increased, they eventually began lending money to European Monarchs, earning extra money by charging deposit fees. As might be expected, this vast reservoir of wealth attracted the wrong kind of attention. In 1307, Philip IV of France, who was experiencing financial difficulties, fabricated charges of devil worship and heresy against the order. On the morning of Friday 13 October, several key Templars were arrested, tortured and eventually executed for their alleged crimes, and their assets seized by the crown. In England, arrests were delayed until December and mainly snared the aged and infirm, strengthening the argument that those her were able-bodied saw what was coming and escaped to various forests and villages, including Sherwood Forest.

As may be expected with such a secretive society, conspiracy theories abound, the most famous being that the Templars were concealing and protecting the bloodline of Christ Himself. Oh! I know! I can talk about conspiracy theories! There is certainly no shortage of those! If you listen to the right people, you will know that the world is ruled by shape-shifting Masonic lizard-men who worship Satan and wish to revert humanity to state of primitive slavery. You will know that these lizard-men, called the Illuminati, had planned to murder Micheal Jackson for threatening to out them, but he beat them to it by faking his own death, and is currently living in Nevada with Elvis and Lady Di. You will know that despite the existence of this Illuminati, the real power is the CIA who are behind all significant world events including Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and the AIDS epidemic. You will be aware of the dangers involved in water fluoridation, vaccinations and Digital TV. As the saying goes, just because I’m paranoid, doesn’t mean no-one’s out to get me!

So, let me see. Top Ten lists. Robin Hood. Knight’s Templar. Conspiracies. Alas, all of these are far too detailed for a 5-7 minute speech. [sigh] Oh well. I guess I’d better get back to twitter.

Backslab Removed

Villainous upper wisdom tooth

Villainous upper wisdom tooth (Photo credit: Dr Parveen Chopra)

What a day!

First I had a trip to the dentist where I had a wisdom tooth removed. Then I hobbled down to the hospital to have my back slab removed. My ankle is still pretty swollen. The doctors discussed putting on another back slab, but in the end they went with a tube bandage instead.

Out of curiosity, I weighed myself before and after it was removed so I could see how much it weighed. Turns out it was three kilos! I’d hate to think how much a full cast weighs!

OMG! It soooo hurts without that back slab! It hurts a lot worse now than on the day I sprained it!

Still, the bright side is I can now take showers instead of having sponge baths. My shower this afternoon was heaven! And at least my mouth doesn’t hurt anymore…lol.

Xmas Fair Tonight

Well, hubby is playing the big red guy at the school xmas fair tonight. He will be handing out all the wonderful things people have been donating as well as the stuff I bought and made. There are loads of books as well as teddy bears, handbag shaped photo frames, porcelain dolphins and heaps of bookmarks, postcards doorknob hangers and stickers.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to the lovely folks at St Vinnies and Bookcrossing for their generosity in making donations for Santa to hand out.

It is doubly lucky because we just found out that most of the things that the school provided were stored in the home of the P&C President, which recently burned to the ground. You can imagine how pleased they were to find out we had a heap of stuff here!

Have a great night everybody and happy holidays!
