It can be quite difficult to get the perfect gift for that special someone. Especially if they are really into a fandom that you don’t know much about.
While some people prefer traditional gifts like jewellery or books, others prefer their gifts to be themed to their current obsession. One fandom that inspires a lot of loyalty, sometimes bordering on fanaticism is Harry Potter.
Non-fans buying for their Harry Potter obsessed loved ones can sometimes find the experience a bit overwhelming, so for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, I thought I’d create a kind of gift guide for family and friends of Harry Potter fans. Continue reading →
Every year, families and governments around the globe decorate their homes and cities to celebrate the Xmas season, and every year the best of such displays are posted on YouTube. I won’t be writing about each individual display, as I think each video speaks for itself.
You will notice, by the date, that I am posting last years displays. I do prefer to show the displays from the previous year, rather than the current one. After all, I don’t want to miss a beautiful display simply because it was uploaded the day after I put my list together, do I?
So sit back, relax, maybe sip some eggnog and enjoy my top ten list of 2016 Xmas displays, from ten to one: Continue reading →
Xmas is a time for family, yes, but when you add children to the mix, it becomes extra special. Nothing can build holiday excitement faster than seeing the wonder on small faces as they watch the Xmas lights or visit Santa at the store.
One way to build your children’s anticipation is to sit down with them and drink a delicious hot chocolate while watching a much-loved holiday movie. Continue reading →
The holidays are almost upon us. As they approach, we will engage in many pastimes peculiar to the season. We will shop for gifts, sing Xmas carols, decorate our home and indulge in the treats we might normally deny ourselves.
One of my favourite activities in the lead up to the holidays is relaxing with my family in front of the television, with a glass of Xmas cheer, and enjoying a good Xmas movie. Continue reading →
As an apology for not posting anything last Monday, I am giving you a second post today. This post is to promote a website I came across, called Christmas Day. They have loads of information about Xmas, decorations and celebrations around the world. Best of all, they have some pretty funny Xmas jokes.
‘Tis the season to indulge, and what better way to do so than with a classic Xmas treat, Coconut Ice. Pleasing to the eye, and containing enough sugar to satisfy even the sweetest tooth, this is a holiday snack your kids will love to make. I haven’t made my first batch of the season yet, so I don’t have a picture to share, but as soon as I do, I’ll post it here. Makes approximately 18 squares.
I got to help Dad pick the tree this year. The one I chose took up the whole backseat. I didn’t mind. It meant I got to sit in the front with Dad. Still, we drove home slowly, ‘cos the trunk was sticking out the window. We’re lucky there weren’t any cops around to give Dad a fine. When we got home, my brother helped Dad carry the tree inside and put it in a bucket. I held it up while he and Dad filled the bucket with dirt from the garden. Continue reading →
You close your eyes and take a deep, shuddering breath. Your ears strain as you try to convince yourself that the house is empty. A low moan sounds from beneath the tree, causing your breath to hitch. Slowly, softly, you caress the brightly wrapped gift as you gently remove the paper an inch at a time. Continue reading →
Butterfly and Annie have been watching an anime called Food Wars recently. Since I have been reading and writing in the same room as the television, I have caught several glimpses of the anime. The food on this show looks divine. I mean, anime food always looks particularly delicious, but anime devoted to food, such as Yumeiro Patissiere or Food Wars take it to a whole other level. I would dearly love to try some of the dishes I’ve seen in these two shows. I wonder if there is an English language cookbook featuring the recipes from the show available? Continue reading →
Sarah and her thirteen-year-old sister had been fighting a lot this year. This happens when you combine a headstrong two-year-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent.
Sarah’s parents, trying to take advantage of her newfound interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-year-old that Santa was watching and doesn’t like it when children fight. This had little impact. Continue reading →
Christmas trees are a fairly standard sight in the home of anybody who celebrates that particular holiday, and many stores and public areas around the world also wow the public with these beautiful decorations.
Every once in a while, however, we come across a tree that is decorated so beautifully that we just want to oooh and aaah in awe.
This is my top ten list of some of the most beautiful Christmas trees from around the world, in order from ten to one: Continue reading →
This is the first time I have ever attempted to draw anything beyond stick figures and smiley faces, plus this was drawn with a mouse on a computer, so I had rather less control than a pencil in my hand. … Continue reading →
Karen woke to the sound of whispering. Rolling over and glancing at the window, she groaned as she saw it was still dark out.
“It’s too damned early,” she grumbled to herself. Hoping to get some more rest, she closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep, ignoring the sounds of feet racing up and down the hallway and the quiet rustling of toys being removed from stockings. She sighed as her body gradually relaxed. She was just about to drift into slumber, when the loud flush of the toilet jerked her back into wakefulness. Continue reading →
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Whichever holiday you observe, please celebrate safely and enjoy the season responsibly. I wish you and your loved ones health, wealth and happiness and, no matter how well 2015 treated you, I hope 2016 is better.
I absolutely adore giving gifts. It is one of my favourite things about Christmas. However, if you are anything like me, gift-wrapping can be fairly frustrating. I look at all those beautifully wrapped presents on TV or in the magazines, then I look at my own wrapped presents, then I shake my head and wonder where the hell I went wrong? Continue reading →
There is plenty to love about Christmas and plenty of things to do. One activity that I love is to crank the volume up and sing along with my favourite Christmas carols. Secular, religious, fast, slow, kids, adult, funny, serious, it makes no difference to me — I love them all.
Still, as with anything in life, I love some more than I love others. So, here is my top ten list of Christmas Carols, from ten to one: Continue reading →
For those of my readers in the Northern Hemisphere, tomorrow is the longest night (and shortest day) of the year, more commonly known as the Winter Solstice. It is a time of year that has led to the development of celebrations in almost every spiritual belief on the planet.
For those of us in the West, the most common celebration we encounter is, of course Christmas, but it is certainly not the only one, or even the most celebrated, around the world.
This world of ours is beautiful, diverse and ever-changing, filled with as many world views as there are people. It saddens me when I see people negating or belittling the beliefs of others. My purpose for this post is to showcase a small portion of the holidays and religious observances being celebrated around the world at this time of year (that being November, December, January), and hopefully knowledge will lead to understanding and, eventually, acceptance. ‘’Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.’
I wish. It sure as hell isn’t that quiet in our house, let me tell you. There’s no popping off to bed early, dreaming of sugar plums (whatever the hell they are) and waiting for good old St Nick here. No, here it’s all noise and bickering and chaos. Continue reading →
