This year has started with a bang. Floods, bushfires and Cyclones in Australia, volcanoes and earthquakes in Russia, volcanoes in Hawaii, blizzards in America and earthquakes in New Zealand, to name just a few. However, few will deny that the worst events so far are those unfolding in Japan.

For those who have been living under a rock I am, of course, referring to the devastating Earthquakes and Tsunami that have not only shifted Japan something like three feet to the East, but have also caused Japan’s worst nuclear incident since World War II.

Why such a geologically unstable country felt the need to build nuclear power plants in the first place is neither here nor there. Right now, the only issue of any importance is trying get the situation under control with a minimum of contamination and as few lives lost as possible.

Unfortunately, this is proving to be more difficult than first thought. It is now feared that vegetables and milk produced in Fukushima and Ibaraki are unsafe for human consumption and shipments from these areas has been banned. In fact, rises in radiation levels have been detected in drinking water as far away as Tokyo, increasing fears about the safety of food in the area.

While I am sure that everyone is thinking of and praying for the people of Japan, a far more effective measure would be to give a little. I realise that, in the current economic climate you are doing it tough. Even as little as $10 – the price of a McDonalds meal – will help. I realise that, with all the disasters preceding this crisis, you may be suffering from ‘compassion fatigue’. This is understandable. However, this is a crisis that will affect the entire world for years to come.
